organizational change - "the practice
of identifying, challenging, and changing the
values, structures and behaviours that perpetuate
systematic racism" (Ontario Anti-racism Secretariat,
1995)
Cross-cultural
- interaction between people of different cultures.
Often used interchangeably with intercultural.
Moving from one's own culture to another in relation
to both communication and training.
Cultural
sensitivity - Awareness about one's cultural
assumptions, biases, behaviours and beliefs. The
ability to interact with and understand people
from other cultures without imposing one's cultural
values.
Discrimination
- The conscious or unconscious act of dealing
with people on the basis of prejudicial attitudes
and beliefs rather than individual merit. The
denial of equal treatment, civil liberties and
opportunity with respect to education, accommodation,
health care, employment and access. In law, discrimination
consists of making unjust distinctions on the
basis of
- religion, political affiliation, marital or
family status
- age, sexual orientation, gender, race, colour,
nationality
- physical, developmental, or mental disability
The roots of discrimination lie
in stereotyping an prejudices.
Diversity
- relates to the recognition and acknowledgment
of individual differences, all the ways we are
unique and different from others. This term describes
the differences that exist within Canadian society
across all four levles:
- individual
- team / organizational
- professional
- societal
An organization practicing diversity
seeks to provide equitable treatment for all employees.
It does this by moving past equal treatment, where
differences are ignored, toward equitable treatment,
where differences are recognized, acknowledged
and eventually valued. |
