Programs & Services

The LSS Program was initiated in late 2004 with the approval from CIC (Canada Immigration and Citizenship) and client needs were decided on a case by case basis.  The Life Skill workers continue the orientation work that the RAP program began with the GARS; often working with them in their home and community environments. It became a permanent component of the RAP program about two years later.

The Life Skill Support Program recruits and provides ongoing training for Life Skill Support Workers.  These workers are then matched with families or individuals who speak the same language.  The program aims to provide essential life skills to newcomers to help them settle and adapt more smoothly into their new community.

The following services are provided:

  • Assessment of Life Skill needs;
  • Provide basic essential life skills to newcomers such as using household facilities, household appliances, safety in the building/house, use of transportation, access to medical facilities, how to deal with emergency - 911, skills on shopping, using banking system ...etc…  Information about the concept and value of personal health, personal hygiene, sanitation and cultural awareness in the new country;
  • Review of success and monitor of settlement progress;
  • Link GARs to community facilities and community services.
