What is SWIS-London?
Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program offers school-based
settlement services for newcomer students and their families at no cost.
It places settlement workers from community organizations in elementary
and secondary schools to help newcomer students and their families
settle into their school and community easily. It is a partnership
between the Service Providing Organizations, School Boards, and
Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
What are the responsibilities of the SWIS worker
at the school?
- Top connect with newcomer families to
determine their needs
- To provide settlement services to families
within the school
- To collaborate with teachers, parents, students
and community organizations to build positive relationships
- To increase newcomers' understanding of the
educational system and parenting issues in a Canadian context
- To provide referrals and facilitate access to
school and community resources
The SWIS worker will provide newcomer families and
students with information and referral on:
- Learning English
- Looking for a job
- Housing
- School in Canada
- Adult education
- Finding a doctor or dentist
- Rights and responsibilities
- Other settlement needs

SWIS-London Partners
SWIS program was launched in London in March 2010. This is a
partnership with the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre, LUSO
Community Services, South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre, London
Catholic District School Board and Thames Valley District School
Board.
Currently, SWIS workers from the London Cross
Cultural Learner Centre provide full time service to two high schools in
London and part-time and itinerant services to elementary schools in
London area.
