Giving Tuesday
On Tuesday, November 29, 2022, individuals, charities, and businesses will come together to participate in GivingTuesday.
GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good.
This can be accomplished through:
Making someone smile
Random acts of kindness
Helping a neighbour, friend, or stranger
Advocating for issues you care about
Volunteering
Donating to help those in need
Over the past 10 years, GivingTuesday has become the world’s largest generosity movement.
The London Cross Cultural Learner Centre (CCLC) has proudly served newcomers in the London and Middlesex County region for over 50 years. Our mission is to provide integration services and support to newcomers and to promote intercultural awareness and understanding. Our extensive experience is focused on helping Government Assisted Refugees (GARs), Refugee Claimants, and other vulnerable newcomers settle, integrate, and succeed in the London community. We address their immediate needs and foster long-term community engagement.
Over the last 2 and a half years, the CCLC has faced great uncertainty and upheaval. The COVID-19 pandemic had tremendous impacts on our clients and staff. There were challenges with mental health, housing, and adapting digital services, among many others.
Furthermore, Afghanistan has recently been faced with one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. As a result, the CCLC welcomed nearly 200 GARs from Afghanistan in 2020-2021, and we continue to welcome more. Additional resources have been put in place to ensure they are well-supported.
The unprovoked war in Ukraine in 2022 has resulted in over 43,000 Ukrainians seeking safety in Canada, with hundreds making their way to London. More are expected. To support them, the CCLC has partnered with the local Ukrainian community to coordinate efforts and has created the Ukraine Newcomer Fund to ensure their needs are met.
However, newcomers to Canada still face many challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the social and economic inequities newcomers face, including housing, job, and financial insecurity.
