Summer Activities for Newcomer Children

Summer in Canada is a wonderful time for newcomer children to explore a wide range of exciting activities during their well-deserved break from school. Immersing newcomer children in summer activities can contribute to their adaptation, language development, skill-building, family bonding, and understanding of Canadian culture.

In this blog post, we will highlight some of the top summer activities in London that will help your newcomer children have an enriching and memorable summer.

Summer Camps

The City of London offers a range of summer camps designed to accommodate the diverse interests of newcomer children. These camps provide an excellent opportunity for them to make friends, learn new skills, and experience Canadian culture firsthand. From sports and arts to nature and technology, there are camps available for every interest and age group. Low-income families are eligible for the Play Your Way Fund, which helps to cover costs.

Our Community Connections team will also host neighborhood-focused day camps, neighborhood days, and family outings for newcomer families. Visit our events page for a full calendar of events

Public Parks and Playgrounds

Also known as the Forest City, London boasts numerous beautiful parks and playgrounds, offering a perfect setting for outdoor fun. Children can enjoy picnics, play on the swings and slides, or engage in friendly sports matches. This encourages physical activity and fosters social interaction with other children in the neighbourhood.

Cultural Festivals and Events

London takes pride in its rich cultural diversity, and summer brings forth a vibrant calendar of festivals and events celebrating various cultures. Newcomer children can actively participate in these festivities and learn about different traditions, music, dance, and cuisine. Such events provide a sense of belonging and a chance to connect with people from similar backgrounds. Here’s a list of upcoming events:

1. Sunfest – July 6-8 at Victoria Park

2. Home County Music and Art Festival – July 13-15 at Victoria Park

3. South Asian Cultural Festival – July 15-16 at Dundas Place

4. Island Fest – July 29-30 at Covent Garden Market

5. Ribfest – August 3-7 at Victoria Park
